Role at TeraView Ltd, 2003 - to date

Since September 2003 I have worked in the Technology Development group of a Cambridge-based startup company, TeraView Ltd. I design, build and evaluate Terahertz (THz) emitters, detectors and systems for pharmaceutical, medical and security applications. Key activities have included:

Role at Agilent Technologies, 2000 - 2003

From April 2000 to March 2003 I worked as a research and development engineer in the III-V Semiconductor Devices group at Agilent Technologies’ manufacturing site in Ipswich, UK. I was involved in the design and characterization of semiconductor lasers for opto-electronic data communications. Key activities and responsibilities included:

Whilst at Agilent I attended The Physics of Laser Communications M.Sc. course at the University of Essex, UK. I also took courses in Programming in Agilent VEE (similar to LabView) and in the simulation and modelling of RF and microwave circuits using Advanced Design System (ADS) software.

Role at Hewlett-Packard, 1991 - 2000

From October 1991 to April 2000 I worked as a development engineer at Hewlett-Packard’s data storage organization in Bristol, UK. I was involved in the design of three generations of DDS-format magnetic tape drives. Activities in which I was involved included:

Publications

My Ph.D. dissertation may be viewed online.

Two papers were published during my Ph.D..

The culture within Hewlett-Packard manufacturing divisions did not encourage the external publication of R&D work. Despite this I presented at conferences with management approval, and two of my papers were published.

I was also author of the patents

Whilst at Agilent Technologies I have been co-author of one paper,

After teaching myself hyper-text mark-up language (HTML) I started using Hewlett-Packard's intranet to publish internal reports, thus making my work easily accessible to international colleagues. I successfully encouraged adoption of this method of organizing and distributing documentation by the R&D departments at Hewlett-Packard and Agilent Technologies.

Hobbies and Interests

I am a member of the Institute of Physics and served on the committee of the Tribology Group from 1995 to 2000. In December 1997 I played a key role in organizing the first ever three-day international conference on the Tribology of Information Storage Devices. This was extremely successful, so was repeated in December 1999 and has now become a regular bi-annual event. The proceedings of TISD’99 were published in the journal Tribology International (volume 33, issues 5, 6, 9), of which I was the guest editor.

I am webmaster for the Ipswich Mountaineering Club, and for the Information Technology, Electronics and Computing (ITEC) Group of the Institute of Physics.

I have been a keen rock climber since 1989 and, despite moving to the flat lands of Suffolk in April 2000, have just completed my most active and successful climbing season. I am gradually improving at orienteering.
